I'm pretty sure he's the only dragon around, and no pony has ever had the chance/inclination to study dragons*. Consider that Twilight has no knowledge of his growth spurt, despite given her personality she would have had read everything that there is to know about dragons. The better question is actually why no one gawks at him, although the answer can be the same: he's still just a baby dragon. Give him a few years to start developing identity issues and rebelling...

On the other hand, people downright skip my posts.

Actually, despite Twilight's status as a huge bookworm, she seems to not really know a lot about a lot of things. Chalk it up to a necessity of the plot.

I can only imagine what might happen if we snuck a copy of Sybil Vimes-Ramkin's textbook on Swamp-dragon illnesses into Twilight's library. Granted I doubt that any of it would apply to Draco Nobilis like Spike.

On the subject of dragons in MLP they do have a live specimen on them. I also wonder why/how Celestia got her hands on a dragon egg. Guess they're saving that for a future episode.

I chalk up the lack of knowledge on dragons being full grown dragons as far too dangerous to study and student reared dragons being released back into the wild once they become naturally too big to live with their masters.

And IMO I think Spike would not be so much affected that he was raised by a pony but more crushed to learn that his birth mother abandoned him.......

There's tons of dragons in Equestria, but they're all hibernating. That's why there's so little info on them.

Well Faust says Celestia raised him. I don't think he was abandoned. Maybe Spike's mother didn't want him growing up under the influence of dragon culture.
