So how did he find the young Diamond Dog? Was he out panning for gold when Patch came floating down the river?
His family couldn't afford to keep all of their pups. They tried to kidnap a pony to help them harvest gems but she got away and they were forced to abandon him.
Patch: Mommy, why do you want to talk to me?
Rarity: There is.......something important that I must talk to you about......
Patch: Is it about Auntie Applejack's trees? I haven't did my business on them -
Rarity: Its not that. Its just......its the reason why you never got a Cutie Mark.....why you never will......
Patch: ......Mommy, why would you say that?! I'll find my Cutie Mark someday! I just need to find m special talent -
Rarity: YOU'LL NEVER GET YOUR CUTIE MARK BECAUSE YOU'RE NOT A PONY!!! *sobs*

I was thinking, because Patch was raised by a pony, they (he/she? Which one?) they would be a lot cleaner and neater looking than a 'wild' dog.

Nah, ginger I understand how you feel. I was actually wondering if we shouldn't do that.
Yes, let's all go to the workshop!

Who do you think actually raised Spike? Did Twilight handle that, or did her parents take care of it? She was a little young to look after a baby dragon all on her own after all, especially with all her time taken up with studying.
