At some point Ponyville was attacked by a creature that drains the youth out of ponies for sustinence. Their dad was aged to death but their mother survived and managed to fend off the creature. She now adopts the guise of their grandmother to keep the horrifying truth from them.

The apple family parents are seperated and AJ Big Mac and Applebloom live with Granny Smith because the divocre got really bloody. AJ still loves both her mama and dady apple so whenever she's feeling down she goes to vist them.
