I think the idea came from the Tyrant Celestia meme. That 1000 years ago or post Nightmare Moon (I'm not sure) Luna tried to from the New Lunar Republic to end Celestia's tyrannical reign.

This was way back in the days when back in the days when one fanon characterization of Luna was that of a Liberal Artist, who opposes her sister's monarchist philosophy. Lunar Republic is that taken to its natural conclusion.

And yes Tyrantestia had a big influence as well.

I think it's implied that Luna will step down (or at least says she will) and relinquish her authority as soon as Celestia has been defeated and nopony need fear the sun's gaze.

I'd like to see, or write, a fic depicting Luna's fall and banishment.

Perhaps ending with Nightmare Moon defiantly vowing to return to take revenge, "If it takes a thousand years!". Something dramatic and prophetic.

I like it for the idea of TS wirting a "Dear Princess" leter in the past and giving it to Celestia but telling her not to open it for "A thousand and one years". Plus that would make Celestia even more of a Chess Master.
