1) What would be a fair fight with Discord involved and 2) Of course not.

Personally, I don't think so.

I always thought of the gap in power between Celestia and Discord to be VAST.

NM is stronger than Celestia, but not THAT much stronger.

That's the feeling I get anyway

If NM was as strong as Discord, then she could've turned FS and RD into Earth Ponies during the ciff scene (would've killed them all)

or she would've brainwashed RD with a touch during the bridge scene

And this is just my own personal headcanon, but I only think of NMM as being just BARELY stronger than Celestia anyway. In my head, Celestia LET HERSELF be taken in the pilot because of her gambit to purify Luna. I reckon there was an EPIC battle in the past with NMM only just gaining the upper hand near the end of it

I'd have thought that Nightmare Moon would have had the upper hand the entire time until the Elements came into play since eternal night was happening until Nightmare Moon was sealed in the moon.

I never thought the celestial bodies worked like that. I figured they were like the elements, and could only be used by the pony their synchronized with. Celestia couldn't just Comandeer the moon unless Luna wasn't around. Once Luna decided "No, it ain't comin' down" they were stuck.

I doubt NMM could have taken Discord.

This isn't Avatar. They just move the moon and sun, they weren't empowered by them. That was my understanding anyway.

I don't think they're powered by the moon and sun. I just think they're intrinsically linked to them. They work like Yin and Yang. Requiring Co-operation to function. If one half stops moving, the other needs to as well. It's all about balance, and power levels aside, NMM STILL ruined that balance

Tht's why Celestia needed to use the elements, because even if she defeated NMM, it wouldn't change anything. Her sis would still be evil and the moon would still be high in the sky.

If the CMC were superheroes or tried to be superheroes, I could imagine them attempting to solve other ponies' minor problems in a grandiose manner, like Rainbow Dash did with the lawn mowing and jar opening. And probably cause more problems in the process, given their sad track record. However, like how they got the award for comedy even though they were going for a rock concert show, maybe they would end up being helpful in ways they didn't realize? (Sweetie Belle kind of did that in a mundane way in Sisterhooves Social, especially with the way her "cleaning" Rarity's room gave Rarity a new design idea)

Maybe their cutie marks will correspond to failure.

Hmmm, now that I think about it, I like to imagine that NMM is acually WEAKER than Celestia, but because of the balance issue that I mentioned, defeating her through force wouldn't mean anything. In a fight, NMM would have the upper hand because she wouldn't be pulling her punches like Celestia would be (not wanting to hurt her sister and all)

I can imagine NMM getting pissed about that and screaming things like "DON'T YOU DARE HOLD BACK, SISTER!!"
