Twilight Sparkle is cutest, most huggable lovable pony (apologies, Fluttershy fans) but Applejack has her moments. I always d'aww at the bit where her applecart tips over in "Applebuck Season."

It seems to me we've been getting a lot of A.J. lately ("Sisterhooves Social" and "The Cutie Pox" were both very neary Applejack episodes IMO), though granted usually as a supporting character, but far more than I was expecting.

Personally I just like them all for different reasons since I find that I can relate to all of them in different ways. Matbe I'm more complicated than most.

Erm, it has that "I am better than you" attitude all over it, which Dashie shares. Iron Pony ep also shows how similar they are.

Pretty much this. Twilight is most relatable, Pinkie is most funny, Rarity has best writing, etc.

I think you just hit on this show's most basic strength. Everyone is relatable.

Ponies are officially omnivores.

I mean, I can understand Pinkie's hot dogs as veggie dogs, but come on. They keep swine!

Swine are kept for the following:

1. ham
2. skin
3. bones
4. Bristle

To get the first three, you obviously have to slaughter a pig first. And the forth is harvested by tearing the hair out. Which is very painful.

The CMC have yet to really realise what they really like to do with their lives yet. Hey, be gladvthey aren't pranking ponies by painting fake cutie marks on each other yet.

As for the relating to the Mane 6 thing, I'm kinda geekish like Twi, stubborn like AJ, a tad nitpicky like Rarity and a bit of an artist too, adventurous and lazy like Dash, random and inordinately cheerful like Pinkie, and sometimes nice like Fluttershy.

Us humans are ridiculously complex.

Maybe the pigs ENJOY living there?

Pigs can also be kept for truffle-hunting, disposal of food that ponies can't eat, and then there's lard, tallow, gelatin and glue (since I doubt ponies would do that even for capital punishment).

Truffle hunting pigs are slimmer and are kept more like dogs.

My take on it is this: Like most other species (rabbits, birds, ferrets), cows and pigs and such live with the ponies because the ponies take care of them. They provide services (like fertilizer and trash disposal, in the cases of the pigs) in exchange for being given shelter and food.

Here's the thing, though - if there's anything I consider Canon Discontinuity, it's the bloody Talking Animal gags. They serve no point, they're unoriginal (and feel such; I could probably name you two other series that have a 'you could have just asked'-style joke it them), and because they're taken so obviously from a sheet of farm jokes, they don't mesh well with the setting. Add in whatever the sociopolitical version of Furry Confusion is, and you have a mess of nonsense that only detracts from the setting in my eyes.

Pigs? Vegetarian?

Pigs are omnivores, they don't just eat vegetables, they eat insects, worms, snakes, small rodents... hell they wouldn't be that fat if kept on all-vegetarian diet.

How dare they have talking animals in a show about ponies.

I still think ponies are omnivores, they have wars and violence and so on, that all is just kept offscreen.

Also, Celestia has bodyguards

They might use the ham for trade with carnivorous races.

As for the guards, they're mostly ceremonial, although they also serve as crowd control.

Do equestrians even really need to wage war? I mean, couldn't the sisters handle the enemy by themselves? I can't imagine they'd WANT to jeapordize their subjects if they can help it

Dear princess Celestia. I have learned nothing about friendship today. However, I learned that whining solves everything.

Vegetarians are omnivores unless eggs or milk don't count.

And about pigs: there is Word of Faust for that : they are with ponies because they need home and ponies need truffle. But I think pigs must be used for meat , not for ponies (like that infamous sandwich) but for other animal, like Winona or Gummy.

Somepony's got to lend a hoof to defend the populace from Everfree-esque predators and help the Princesses(s) guard against invaders and hostile carnivore races.

Don't forget the horrific things the g1 ponies had to face like Tirac and the Smooze.
