allthough, when I go to the annual pantomime, my nan books the tickets about 6 months in advance. Maybe this is something similar?

The episode never said that the Gala was that night. Odds are they were probably invited months in advanced for the event.

Pretty much. You can probably assume that some episodes happen in a particular order, but beyond that it becomes more of crapshoot.
