Yes, the Dash/Sonic thing was mostly about them both being fast but it also is that Dash's personality reminds of Sonic in some ways, especially the whole Mascot With Attitude thing. I mainly thought of it because of the way she made such a big emphasis on coolness as a trait she wanted in a pet. Oh yes, and they're both blue! And when Sonic goes Hyper, he flashes a RAINBOW of colors!

I think the aniamls enjoy their time at Fluttershys place, but they do long to become a pet and have a master that can devote all their time to them.

Think of the imaginary friends of Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends as an example.

Also, can I say again, I really like Tank.

It becomes even sadder if you subscribe to my headcanon that Tank is several hundred years old (so he won't outlive RD)

Implying that he's been looking for a good home for almost his entire life

It's not so much cheating as just refusing to give up, even when the odds are stacked against you. I'm sure RD appreciates that.

It may have been that Tank had an owner before, and then when he/she died Tank was lonely and wanted another one... not that that's much better, come to think of it.
