Yeah, D&D is pretty directly inspired by Tolkein, but for example, you're much more likely to see Magic A Is Magic A in a modern work of fantasy than you are Tolkein's more mystical, mysterious style. Basically, Tolkein gave us elves, dwarves, wizards, etc. but D&D gave us most of the tropes we now associate with the genre.

Actually 1st ed D&D had a pretty mysterious mystical magic system. Over the years it became more Magic A is Magic A because it's more fun to play that way.
By the way, has anyone else played Age of Wonders? Probably the only fantasy that comines Lo TR with Dune. Though it has a bunch of units based on more classical mythology too.

Munchkin's corrolary: infinite numbers often can be as well.

I'll keep that in mind, but I personally prefer playing in person. Also, playing tabletop games online tends to mean a lot of hoops to jump through that just don't exist on a physical tabletop.

In my limited experience I think you're right. Especially gaming via just Skype takes way too long.

I've played D&D over Skype before. It wasn't nearly as immersive as it was in person.
(Also, it made it incredibly easy to cheat on my die rolls and my prepared spells, and since my DM was actively trying to kill us off towards the end, I ended up having to a few times just to survive.)

Sheesh, what were you playing, Dark Sun?
Roses are red, violets are blue.
I'm sorry to say, you've been eaten by a Grue.

It seems kind of bad to have an adversarial relationship with the DM. Unless you're playing Tomb of Horrors or something.

Speaking of Ben Affleck, anybody got an opinion on him being the next Batman? Personally I think he's an odd choice for the masked crusader and it's very jarring considering that he goes from a superhero whose main gimmick is that he can't see to a DC character that practically EVERYONE knows about. How does that work?

Adversarial relationship with the GM, you say? "Maybe I'll stop making Zelda noises when you stop making train whistle noises whenever I give you guys a hint!" "Hey, you're the one who decided we needed steampunk elements."
