@ Apple: Just one clip so far, but it's made up of scenes/storyboards from several episodes. At the bottom of the screen, we see 406, 401, etc.

Just watched again, and yeah, it's pretty clear that the Nightmare Moon clip is a flashback. Luna looks genuinely surprised as she's transforming into NM.

Good stuff. This season looks like a lot of fun.

It looks like the apple family (and Pinkie) are going on a road trip, which should be awesome. Luna being surprised at her transformation implies that it's something caused by an outside force; she didn't do it on purpose. It appears she started the Eternal Night beforehand though so it's not like she's blameless.

Perhaps Luna was infected by... I was gonna make a Dresden Files joke then I realized it was a big spoiler.

Well that's pretty much a given. Anyway, I think the instant apple tree is just standard song montage stuff. Things that happen during a song sequence aren't necessarily meant to represent reality.

@Badwolfwho: Then why does it happen at all? Luna clearly didn't will it to happen intentionally. Therefore it had to come from somewhere else. Plus it explains the change in personality. The instant NM was transformed back into Luna she was apologetic and obedient to her older sister.

It sounds like the voices may have been scratch tracks. In a couple of cases it sounded like they weren't really trying hard to get the voices right, so they may be doing some practice. In addition, sound engineering often has lines recorded separately and spliced together(VO vs Foley is a prime example of this) so it's possible any sounds of anguish haven't been recorded or implemented yet, just as sound effects hadn't.

Actually, much implies It was a xombination of free will AND outside influence. Luna inviting in an outside force for example.

@Badwolfwho: But there is in show evidence that Luna was corrupted by something. Her appearance, demeanor, personality, and goals all did a complete 180 when she was hit by the Elements of Harmony, as though they were dispelling some negative effect. We know the Elements aren't just a "make villain good" ray, because they didn't change Discord at all.

There was a whole comic about how Nightmare Forces corrupted Luna into Nightmare Moon, and last I checked, the comics are considered part of cannon.

And Lauren herself said that it was outside influences that helped transform Luna.

Since she lives out in M Anehattan there's no particular reason for her to be there all the time. Anyway, it looks like Pinkie somehow becomes part of the Apple family.

It seems fairly obvious that the Superhero segment is some kind of dream Spike is happening. Especially since he recognized all their costumes but was surprised to see it was them. The art looked a bit different for it to, I'm guessing their going to make it look more like a superhero cartoon or more Animesque.

My guess is that Luna invoked the transformation voluntarily, but wasn't aware just how much it was going to influence. By the time she realized it was turning her into something she didn't want to be, it was too late.

Interestingly enough, Applejack at least seems just as surprised as Spike. Do the main six somehow end up in Spike's dreams as well? We know Luna can, after all (random theory: the Medusa Pony is actually Princess Luna, doing some role-play to unwind).

Well, of the clips (or stroyboard sets as it were), Scootaloo one is the only one that has got me interested strangely enough. I need more info on the episode that the song and Nightmare Moon clip comes from before I can feel really interested, and the superhero one does not interest me in the slightest.

I wonder if it will be a Powerpuff Girls parody.

Anyway, there was the I Ce Cream Dream, so that's precedent, but this sequence will probably be a lot longer, if not the whole episode.
