It's actually kind of silly. I encountered a stray cat walking home from the metro today. It was malnourished and undoubtedly sick and there was obviously something wrong with its eyes, but it was clear it had belonged to someone at some point in the past as it rushed to me, crying in distress. I keep stewing over simply leaving it. I feel that I ought to have bought it back home, at least so I could try getting it to the vet or the local shelter rather than simply abandoning the poor thing.

A friend I spoke with pointed out that bringing him home wouldn't have worked out too well though, as I already have a cat and if I had, a fight would have undoubtedly broken out.

When I was a kid, we took in a stray cat we found wandering around in the field behind our house. Within three weeks, she gave birth to four kittens in our closet. Someone had abandoned her because she was pregnant.

We kept her and all four kittens, and got all the females spayed. I don't know if we would have done anything differently if we'd known it was a pregnant cat.

There's a woman on our street with 15 cats. They all wander around and kill mice, so they're tolerated.

@ Thirikal: You don't know what kind of illness that cat was suffering from, and there's a chance your healthy cat would have contracted it too. Also, as you said, they probably would have fought.

Yeah, Galen contracting whatever illness the other cat had was also a concern. I understand the practical arguments that bringing it home would've been a poor call, but I still feel rotten for abandoning something in need. Anyway, sorry to derail the thread like that.
