Well excluding the second animated series, everything up to G3 was in the same continuity. And there's a cryptic line or two suggesting G3 might be in the far future.

That would make sense; it would allow them to capitalized on G4's success by making a built-in connection.
Thought at the same time, they'd have to make some sort of change to how the show works to keep it from being a pure G4 spin-off. Like an entirely new cast and setting. It would also be cool if they shook up the cast construction. Like have a smaller "core" cast, but have a larger and more developed supporting cast. Like have 3 "main" cast members, but then have pretty much all the side characters get regular Day in the Limelight episodes.
