The pony merch is okay, (the NMM toy looks badass), but that's never been the main draw for me. As for the rest of the controversy:

EQG aside, I think a lot of the merch has really improved over time. Particularly in regards to the princess toys. As JT said, the NMM is indeed very badass, and the color-accurate Celestia toy is leagues better than the Pinklestia toy; not just because of color, but the face looks a lot better too. Less fisheyed.

I am of the opinion that hasbro was trying to make something specifically for older girls (Eq G). There may be a small (or equal given Fi M's own) Periphery Demographic but that may ether be accidental or done as a result of dxh's trying to make the movie good.
