Good morning. Now watching the subbed Japan S1, E7.

Twi: Equestria will be covered in smoke for the next 100 years.
Fluttershy: *gasp*
Rarity: And that's not good for the skin.

Dragonshy is one of the episodes I've watched the most, so I'm really noticing all the little cuts they made. There's a lot of 'em so far. sad

Yeah, the cuts were kind of a pity.

I'm sorry to keep dragging my art into the thread but I think that my lines are way way way too thick. But it's hard to make them thinner. Dam.

Which lines? I always used both the narrow and broad tips of my Zig Writer pen when drawing/inking. There's a bunch of drawing guides on the web that tell you how to use thick and thin lines.

The boarder lines. I mean, look at this guy. Thick thick way too thick lines. Oh and my characters are way too static too. There's little sense of movement about them.

My main tip is to start with thin lines, then add thick outlines where needed.

As for sense of motion, doing gesture drawings and studying actual animal movement helps a lot.

Looks fine to me for the most part, only places that do look a bit thick are around his muzzle and his raised knee, where you can tell your went over it more then once. And hey those ARE damn good, just take your time and work on it little by little.

@Apple: I think your art looks cool. Though, if you need help, I'll tell you what Muumi told me- Soft and fast is always better than hard and slow. Don't concentrate too hard and go with the flow. Or something like that, I can't remember that well.

Gex we have this thing here called maturity. And let me give you a hint, Age is only an influence, not even the primary factor, mmkay? And I wouldn't diss Mousa, He's an old man.

@Apple: you're talking about how Ego's lines taper off right? That requires a light hand when drawing in lines with the brush tool. Your standard drawing tablet stylus can detect at least 510-1024 levels of variable pressure. I haven't really played around with pressure sensitivity, but I used to simply manually ink my lines on real paper with the 0.5mm and 1.2mm tips of my Zig Writer pen, then refine the lines in Photoshop 6.0/GIMP.

So I just have to be careful with the pressure. Ok, I'll try.

As I mentioned, I used a technique of thick/thin pen-tips I got from some mangaka technique guides, then applied manual line smoothing in Photoshop in a fashion I learnt from Dean "Noogy" Dodrill's old site.

So, who's teaching Scoots?

Between the wirecraft Soulgems, the photos I take randomly, and my traditional/digital hybrid drawing technique, I apparently am becoming a multiclasser in art lol

What I tend to do, although I'm not sure how well this work in a more sensitive medium like a tablet over a pencil and paper, is draw in 'swipes' - making quick, short strokes in the general direction of the line I'm making. It does lead to frayed edges in places, but they're always headed in the same direction at least(My old roommate, who studied art, once complimented me on how solid and 'directed' my lines seemed because of this). This creates an overall thinness once you get good with it, as well as the tapering effect. A careful eye might note that my lines don't always meet exactly, which is kinda up in the air as to whether it's a good or bad thing.

So yeah - I advise playing around with swipes, since you'll tend to use a lighter touch with them anyways, but as always it's best to play around and find a technique that works best for you.

@ Apple: Not really much I can add that hasn't been said, but you could approach your drawing like you would if you were drawing on paper like a pencil artist. Start with light strokes and get the basic outline down. Then, you can add heavier strokes where needed to define the shape and give the character more of a "3D" look. Avoid using the heavy strokes for the entire outline. Subtlety is the key.

I am officially DONE with Derpibooru. I'm sick of Season 4 drama, I'm sick of Meghan Mc Carthy and M.A, Larson being called hacks and idiots and accused of pissing all over Lauren Faust's sacred vision, I'm sick of fans raining bile on Hasbro for no more coherent reason than that it's Hasbro, and I don't want anything to do with the guy who said (and this is an accurate paraphrase) that he hopes Twilight gets her goddamned wings ripped off and shoved down her fucking throat.

Anyone who wants me to look at any MLP picture had better link me somewhere else, because I can't in good conscience (or without nausea) give that site another hit.

Until you have a MAJORITY of the fans screaming and damning the creators to hell for what they're doing wrong, it's not a real fandom.
