okay lets get off that topic. Finally made a little review for the last great fanfic I read.. had written one up earlier, but come how the freaking computer ate it....
Okay, Mendacity, a rather interesting story. Without major spoilers, it’s a story of Bon-Bon the changeling. Not really an original idea for explaining her voice changes, but where the story really shines and is unique is how it handles the Changelings. Blending in European folklore to cast them as Unseelie Fey. Creatures from the land of Faerie. With Bon Bon being a rebel from the Court, wanting to live the life of a normal pony with her love Lyra. Until something happens that threatens that life.
Story- Amazing. I love how the writer blended in the traditional folklore of the Fey. not just with Changelings, but others, making it feel like something that could actually happen, especially with the origin he created for them. The actual plot is very very much character focused, there is an important quest Bon Bon is on, but the real drama and the real hook of the story is character driven. And it is done masterfully. You really feel Bon Bon’s pain and fear and worry over her desire to tell Lyra the truth about who and what she is, and the fear of being rejected by her if she does. The plot itself is also pretty good, and everything works well and is pretty well meshes with the canon events it takes place during.
Characters- Again amazing. This is by far one of the best Lyra/Bon Bon relationships I’ve seen. And as above this is a really character driven story, so luckily they are more then up for it. There’s only one major OC and she is hilarious. Managing to strike the balance where they are annoying to the other characters, without being so to the reader. The canon characters that come up feel true mostly, and are consistent. My only gripe is how it handles Chrysalis. Pushing her a bit to far into Evil for the sake of being evil and nasty for my taste. Sure there was a hint or touch of that to her character, but this pushes it a bit further then I like.
Ponyness - While the inclusion of the Unseelie bits is handled well, and does feel like it would make sense with what we’d seen by that point, it does feel just a tad off to me. But only to the point I wouldn’t make it a personal headcanon. The overall story nails the feel of the show. As above, the canon characters felt in character for the most part. barring my slight issues with Chrysalis, which isn’t really OOC, since there is enough hints that she might be like that. (though it is mostly contradicted by the comic, But I’m never going to hold something against a work due to changes/additions to canon made after it was written.) The canon events are used well, and any changes are given an explantion for why we saw something different.
Overall 4.5/5 Amazing, well done story that both stays true to the feel and spirit of the show, while being an enjoyable read in it’s own right without relaying on the show to appreciate it. The usage of traditional European folklore and Fey/Faerie was done really well and fit with the setting. The characters well developed and enjoyable. Something I would highly recommend anyone reading.
okay how do I do the quote block thingie?
