I'm not saying I think their friendship or relationship is bad, I'm just saying it's kind of neat to see one that takes a different approach for once.

As for the whole Vinyl Dubstep thing, where did that even come from? In fact, why is it that most of this fandom's music consists of Dubstep or other techno stuff? I wouldn't mind a couple rock songs here and there.

The way they're written, it seems they've become the second Lyrabon. Probably because we got fics like the Vinyl Scratch Tapes and Allegrezza fairly early on.

And of course, stories about them meeting in university are a dime a dozen these days.

I prefer the 'Wacky roommates' setup from Epic Wub Time myself.

@Blue: I'm the same way. I've been tempted to make my version of Vinyl dislike dubstep, just because she's so sick of getting so many requests from it.

Vinyltavia is okay, although I've always thought that pairing them up solely because their both musicians felt like kind of a weak basis. Which yeah, is pretty dumb given the fandom has created pairings with far less basis than that, but at least Lyra and Bon Bon are actually seen interacting.

My personal headcanon of Octavia and Vinyl is that they're more Friendly Rival types to each other, with maybe a touch of Sitcom Arch Nemesis. Making them a straight up romantic pairing just makes them into Lyrabon 2.0.

My other headcanon is that Octavia roomed with Lyra in college and their room was across the hall from Vinyl.

@JT: Well, it was a popular enough duo/pairing that Vinyl and Octavia were seen together on the offical Mlp Fim Season 2 poster, at least.

Also, you seem to be implying that two Lyra/Bonbon-ish pairings is a bad thing.

Well, I believe there's a high-level "Create Undead" spell in D&D that can create vampires out of basically nothing.

Also, I remember one story where Dracula, the first vampire, was actually Judas Iscariot, cursed for his betrayal. So, there's that.

For what it's worth, I picture her as something of a ponyfied Hideki Naganuma who freely mishmashes genres to create a funky sounding pop style. Octavia overhears a sample of one of her performances mixed into a track and goes to try and get her arrested for copyright infringement.

However, she finds that Vinyl actually did a pretty tasteful job of her work and they slowly bond over different styles of music.

True. But still, I think there needs to be something more to their interactions than "they both play music".

Also, we only need one Lyrabon-ish pairing. Two is just redundant.

I'm kinda similar. My thought has always been that they have a kind of grudging respect for each other. Octavia doesn't like how Vinyl leans so heavily on electronica, and Vinyl thinks Octy is hopelessly outdated and old-fashioned, but they both recognize the merit of each others' styles.

This fandom is just really ship-trigger happy. Lyra and Bon Bon being seen together totally means they have to be marefriends. Because there's no such thing as best friends in a show subtitled Friendship is Magic.

I can imagine it being a bit like The Quartet*

In Feedback and Sing The Night's Song, I had written Scratch as having a fairly wide musical taste, but performing largely a sort of symphonic electronic - the idea was that she could play instruments, and would translate them into electronic, then alter the sounds a bit. I don't know how that would actually sound, but I thought it was a neat idea and nobody called me on it seeming stupid, so...
