So, with Faust saying that the sisters each had 3 Elements, I'm going to restate my opinion on which ones they were.

I think Celestia had Kindness, Laughter, and Honesty, whereas Luna had Generosity, Loyalty, and (though they didn't know its name) Magic.

Why do so many people think Luna had Loyalty? If anything, that's the element she's least likely to have wielded.

EDIT: And there's no way Celestia had Honesty. Switch those two and I'll agree with you.

It's just as tragically ironic as her having Generosity, and her losing her connection to that Element would similarly be a sign of her fall.

I go with Celestia has Laughter, Kindness and Honesty. With Luna having Generosity, Loyalty and Magic as well.

@ Sereg: Because if she betrays her elements it explains why Celestia can use them. And still having one explains why Celestia couldn't use them to their full effect.

I dunno if she'd still have one. I've sort of been viewing Magic as faith in one's friends coupled with a desire for friendship.

Why does she need to have betrayed her elements for Celestia to have used them? Celestia never betrayed her elements and the Mane 6 could still use them.

I've always seen the loss of connection as happening from new bearers picking them up.

Apparently, the conneciton broke when Celestia used the Elements on Luna. Maybe it has something to do with turning them on someone else who wielded them.

@Kegisak: That also makes a lot of sense. Trixie could easily be imagined as somepony who was never able to reach the top purely on merit and had to stoop to faking it to get the recognition she wanted.

Re: elements, I've always broken it down as this:

Celestia: Loyalty, Laughter, Kindness

Luna: Generosity, Magic, Honesty

I know it's a bit weird to give Luna Generosity and Magic (especially as it represent friendship), but I think it fits from an ironic standpoint as the reason she fell in the first place was because she didn't live up to the elements, or maybe thought that they failed her. Like if she went through a ton of trouble to create a nice night (generosity) which them wasn't appreciated at all and eventually led to her saying "screw this".

In a way, I can actually imagine the School for Gifted Unicorns - and most Advanced Placement type of schools - as being really hard on student.s You're told you're remarkable and special, but then put into a situation where everyone is special, and therefore you feel remarkably average. That must be an... interesting experience.

Similarly, her fall was her turning her back on her subjects, believing that she could never have their love, and deciding that she would prefer to have their fear, instead.

Discord breaking free when he did suggests otherwise. It'd make sense doing it in the interim of new bearers. It wouldn't make sense lounging about for a thousand years, waiting for new bearers to emerge that could defeat him and then leaving.

@kegisak: Trixie must not have been able to cope with it, so she created the "great and powerful" persona to mask her own emotional instability.

She simply said that Celestia couldn't use them, not that it completely severed her connection to them. There was still probably a link, but because of what she had done, she couldn't actually unite their powers and use them. But it was enough of a link to keep the spell on Discord intact.
