I'm going with the changelings each having their own personality; it's just that most of them aren't very bright. Chrysalis and a few of the officers are smart, but the rest are cannon fodder.
good morning everypony.
you're stronger than you think you are.
'Sup?
Changeling intelligence.
Anyway, I don't think the way they were fooled proves they were that dumb either. With so many flying around, it's hard to keep track.

An army of shapeshifters can be fooled if they're all dumb enough to disguise as you.
Yeah they clearly do not have a hive mind, otherwise RD's little trick wouldn't have worked. My thoughts is that they are pretty much just like anypony else. With a few changes to the base thought structure and what not due to being what they are. Even more likely to give into a herd instinct. Less of a personal sense of self preservation or desire then one for the hive as a whole.
did any of the Changelings besides Chrysalis actually talk? i do know that
they can understand speech
, but i don't recall them ever talking back.
you're stronger than you think you are.
Changelings have to be able to talk otherwise their disguise will fail when they need to say something.
They talk in the comics, apparently.

Other than Chrysalis they hadn't talked outside of a disguise until the comics though.

you're right. and there was
a scene where they talk.

I don't know if those were actual changelings though, or just thralls - ponies under Chrys's control, like Shining Armour.
Well when they change right in front of them, they would know every pony that wasn't them was a bug. This way it might lead to them pulling their punches. but then failed when as you said, they went after the target they looked like instead of others. I'm still a but WTF over why Twilight simply accepted AJ saying "real me" as her being the real one. Should have done something to make sure she was the real one.
@Seraphem: That particular example was because Twilight was zapping all the changelings with magic; when she hit the real Applejack, it was immediately obvious that she wasn't a changeling.
@Kegisak: In theory, yes, but I'm not sure how practical that is. I mean for Twilight or Rainbow Dash it would be pretty easy, but AJ or Fluttershy might have a tough time if they're surrounded by a variety of other ponies. That and it's a situation where you don't really have much time to think.
Yeah, the main dumb thing they did was to disguise themselves as each other's targets. What they should have done was turned into more generic non-mane 6 ponies so they'd still know which six ponies to attack, and none of the mane 6 would know who was a changeling and who was a pony.
Alternatively, they could just each attack their own duplicate like with the Powerpuff Girls.

I suppose it's harder when they outnumber you.

I just found out you can merge layers down in photoshop. This means I can do the outlines on a separate layer then attach them latter when I finish them. This will be very useful, and might fix that shadow tool problem.
