Man the Earth Ponies really have it crap in this setting.

They can also use the grooves on their horseshoes to help pick things up.

In addition to what others have already said, there was a Tealove sockpuppet here for a while. The fanon about her liking cozy hats came from someone misreading her toy's description, which says that she likes cozy chats. Since Tealove is a Pinkie recolor, I suggested that Tealove was Pinkie's more refined British cousin, but that idea never really seemed to catch on.

My headcanon for how hooves grasp things is that all ponies have a natural amount of magical low level tactial TK. And it's mostly something that they can't think about, it just happens, and trying to think about it, makes it not work. And this natural TK for everypony also explains why all unicorns can use TK no matter what other spells they can use. It's simply an extension of something that is natural to all ponies. Projecting that low level TK field away from their body and use it as normal TK.

The show doesn't seem to have any hard rules about how it works. It's basically "E Ps and Pegasi use their mouths or wings, unless that would be ridiculous, so they just use their hooves."

Yep. In fact there was one rather strange moment in The Crystal Empire where one of the crystal ponies walked around while holding corn in one hoof. You'd think it would be impossible to walk with only three legs, but she basically just levitated.

Actually, we've only seen Earth ponies use their tails as an appendage. The closest a non EP got to that was Rarity carrying the cake in Party of One in he tail, and that was less grasping it then simply using it's coiled mass to hold it still like a sling.

Anyway, E Ps don't have it that bad. The animators just have them use whatever's convienent, occasionally resorting to rather absurd stuff if necessary. Especially in the later seasons.

There was also Sweetie Belle dusting with her tail, but that isn't really using it for grasping either.

Yeah that wasn't using more then a normal tail on a normal horse would do, simply waving it back and forth.
