Isn't the beginning of the story supposed to be the hook?
Which it is.
It has to be interesting in it's own right.
Which it is.
In fact, it's usually more interesting then the rest of the beginning.
Admittedly it isn't, but it's kind of hard to compete when its set during the wedding reception and the first chapter includes death, claustrophobia, police chases, spies, serious injury, fighting,
Poor Communication Kills, a time jump of over a thousand yeears fromthe perspective of the reader and slightl longer from the perspective of the protagonist, another character considering a
Heroic Sacrifice and poisoned darts.
Think of a movie where there's a precredits sequence that sets up the main conflict before getting into the boring life of the protagonist. Lots of novels do the literary equivalent.
I'm aware of the technique. It's my favourite way of opening. My first piece of fiction had the protagonist's foot explode in the first sentence. And yes, I
will drop a fic if it doesn't get my attention quickly. There are several fics I've iven up on before finishing the first chapter because I didn't feel hooked. I did here.
