@ apple: i have an OC that started as a blatant rip off of Static Shock. (and at the core, he still kind of is) we all rip off something sometime. try adding a personality quirk or change in appearance that the source material doesn't have, like an unhealthy obssession with algae, or a birthmark shaped like a banana on the back of his ear.

I copied a passage from The Idiot as an in-universe book excerpt in Alarm Clock. When a pre-reader praised the writing style of this passage, I went back and heavily edited it, until it was a pastiche with an obvious source rather than a ripoff.

And, since today is apparently National Jump To Conclusions Day...

The main premise of my current story is pretty much exactly Bat Boy The Musical, except with the upper class instead of rednecks. With a healthy dose of actual inspiration provided by The Who.

@Apple: There's no such thing as a wholly original story. No matter what you write, there's something out there already that's similar. That's the whole point of this site. They might feel like rip-offs at first, but as you write it it'll develop in its own way.

Also, according Einstein, "Creativity is knowing how to hide your sources."

If you are feeling that way, you are probably doing it right. If the similarity is instantly recognizable, though, it can be problematic, but there are many cases people getting away with even that.

That's one thing that Ditzy Doo and the bronies have in common: they were not supposed to exist.

I'm waiting to actually get the 6th issue, which actually examines it in more detail. I think it's pretty cool from what I've seen so far, though.
