The editor suggested the jam thing. Just checked my copy of Issue #3, no jars to be seen...though one cat is holding a bottle of burp-o-bismol.

I'm sure the writers/artists are allowed to make jokes on their own time, which includes their personal twitter accounts. Granted, we usually don't get rape & bestiality jokes, but hey that's Refuge in Audacity for you.

One can be forgiven for not getting it even after looking at the original. Cow Tools was pretty out there even for Far Side.

That's the joke. In the anthology book I had, Larson mentions that the most letters he ever got by far were by readers confused about Cow Tools.
