There's no evidence that ponies are magically awesome at whatever they do.

The evidence is circumstancial, but it's there.

Of course, Harmony Theory has a plot pont that there is far less magic around than there was at the time of the show. So Rainbow Dash is basically treated as a super soldier due to how she ha the powers of an ancient pegasus (some modern pegasi can cloudwalk, some can do minor weather manipulation, some are agile, some have supersonic flight, none have have all of that, her strength and durability are considered powerful earth pony level and her healing speed is practically regeneration from their point of view).

Sounds like a weird fic.

There's a lot of mystery in it, but questions are starting to be answered.

Basically, RD wakes up to find out that everypony who even remembers her (of which there aren't many) think she's been dead for over a thousand years. In the mean time, Equestria has split in two. There's a good reason why there's so little magic left. The Princesses did it deliberately in order to try and stop a dangerous threat. There's alot of crazy things going on, but it's awesome.

@Sereg: So what, Harmony Theory takes place in the future or summat?

Sounds kind of interesting, a story after my own heart. Or at least, it's got elements after my own heart - 'Talents Win' fits with my liking of the idea that 'an earth pony is better at it(if it doesn't need magic or flight)', and I like to posit that there's less magic at the time of the show(OR at least they're not as good at using it) than in ancient times anyways - so I may want to think about giving it a shot. How long is it?

@Kegi: a prologue taking place right after A Canterlot Wedding and then another 14 chapters so far which are all in the far future but headed by an extract from a book written by Twilight about the dark secrets she found out about the Elements of Harmony. It's really awesome. RD is well written and the O Cs are awesome too. My favourite is RD's first new friend Star Fall who is basically Twilight if she was a pegasus and just as awesome. My second favourite is Star Fall's Gryphon bodyguard Astrid. But seriously, everyone is awesome.

EDIT: 173 406 words so far.

The ending is likely to still be while. We've sytrarted getting answers, but more questions are popping up.

170 - holy shit that's long!

Still, I suppose I could give a chapter or two a shot, see if it's worth it... I just started reading Wheel of Time, and I don't need another epic on my plate, though.

@Kegi" I'd suggest reading until the end of Chapter 3 -Native Inflection before deciding. That's when you really start getting hints about how epic this is going to be.

Hey I'm back.

To answer some points from earlier:

Yes story, I know making them the 'best' at their talents sounds Sueist and werid, but it's exactly like keg says. They have to level up to get there...with intense training, experience and set backs. See, look at it like this:

The mane six are the best at what they do:

Twilight is the most powerful spell caster there is, and a natural leader.

AJ is a farmer with an affinity for plants beyond compare.

RD is the fastest flier there is.

Rarity is a superb designer.

No pony knows animals like Fluttershy.

And pinkie has pinkie powers.

So my guys can be similar, but in different fields:

My engineer has discovered and ultised a power source no other pony understands.

My chef's food is just outstanding...he can make anything edible taste heavenly.

The doctor has a superior understanding of anatomy, medicine etc.

And so on. They aren't instant experts, but they are masters of their chosen fields...eventually.

Well, most ponies who figure out their Destiny and get their Cutie Mark tend to stick with what they love and become masters at it anyways :V

Yeah, but there's a difference in how they have to use it - it's one thing to build and repair a boat in the harbor, it's another to repair a boat while under fire.

Likewise, if you can make seaweed edible, you're probably ab it better off than someone who has fresh ingredients delivered to his door every morning. Skill is bred by adversity.

Twilight has awesome magical talent that manifested by itself. If she hadn't studied hard under Celestia and learned how to harness and control that magic, though, she would have wiped out Equestria.

All of the mane six are continuing to learn how to get the most out of their respective talents.

The mane six are the best at what they do:

Close, but not quite.

Twilight is the most powerful spell caster there is,

Confirmed multiple times to be false. She just has the highest potential of any unicorn Celestia has seen.

and a natural leader.

True.

AJ is a farmer with an affinity for plants beyond compare.

Is she? Applebuck Season actually implies that more than half the bucking is done by Big Mac for a start. And we don't have any other evidence supporting her as better at this than other ponies other than her leading the plant team in Winter Wrap Up which is inconclusive.

RD is the fastest flier there is.

No. She claims to be the fastest Pegasus in Equestria. Now. It's implied that there have been faster pegasi in the past and that there are faster non-pegasi.

Rarity is a superb designer.

Superb, but is she the best?

No pony knows animals like Fluttershy.

Are we sure of that? She didn't even head the animal team in Winter Wrap Up. That was Amethyst "Sparkler" Star. Admittedly, that doesn't tell us much, but still.

And pinkie has pinkie powers.

Are we sure these are unique and not simply unusual?

EDIT:

Well, most ponies who figure out their Destiny and get their Cutie Mark tend to stick with what they love and become masters at it anyways :V

Raity was profficient with her talent the instant she got her cutie mark. AB can already renovate dilapidated houses in ridiculously short amounts of time, never mind what happened with Cutie Pox. Pinkie could make her family smile on her first attempt. Twilight was a walking nuke. Rainbow Dash's Sonic Rainboom. Fluttershy can communicate with animals on her first attempt.

Keg can explain this much better than I can.

And one team mate will be the strongest equine alive...strength of 30 stallions in each leg...like the heroes of the old epics.

I just take the CM's as meaning that they have a natural skill for something and are naturally proficient at it. They have a good chunk of inborn skill but they'd never be "the best" unless they put a lot of time into practicing it.
