Nah, some horses are huge. I think there was a Swiss breed that was well around that height, and more bulky, too.

That said, it's worth bearing in mind she stood as tall as Saddle arabians. Best to assume they were actual arabian horses, which are about 5 feet tall, max... which gives a bit more credence to that image.

Case in point, Clydesdales. Those things are enormous. But yeah, people have made multiple attempts at determining pony sizes, and the majority of them seem to agree that the average pony is around 4 feet tall.

Im about 5'1 and I used to take lessons. With most horses I barely came up to their shoulder, even some ponies I couldn't see over.

Yup. If you've seen Brave, there was a Clydesdale in that. I tend to think of there being a sort of breed of ponies in the mlp universe who are the equivalent of Clydesdales, who live in the Passlands. They call them 'drafties', and they talk in a huge, thick dialect. their the sort of Picts

Big Mac could pass for a Draft horse of sorts. He even wears a horsecollar which is what the load was attached to so a horse could pull better.

It's possible. His build being so different from any other model we've seen has always lead me to believe he takes very closely after someone - be that someone Applejack's father or be Mac adopted, I can't speculate on. (Well, that's not strictly true, I have written a story that very heavily implies Big Mac was adopted, but you know...)
