Do they nail the horseshoes on? It sounds painful.
Life is simple: it has no nontrivial normal subgroups.

Roughly as painful as clipping your nails.
Only the frog of a horses hoof is sensitive, but shoes are nailed into the nail, which is hard and nerveless. It's actually literally the same stuff as fingernails and hair.
Still, in-show most horseshoes seem to be slip-ons.

I can imagine having to nail on and pry off the shoes every time they wanted to change over would get old really fast.
Yeah, nail-ins would probably only be used by like, career soldiers or something. Someone who needs really resilient shoes and isn't really liable to want to take them off. Good for someone who needs to leap into action at a moments notice, bad for anyone else.

Perhaps they use cords or magnets?

Sticky hooves should work well enough for the ornamental slip-ons.

My guess is that since most ponies don't do the types of labor modern horses do, they wouldn't need iron shoes. Especially since those are only necessary if the horses will be constantly riding over hard or rocky ground, which isn't the case in Equestria most of the time.

What's weird is that they are never shown wearing horseshoes, but they do leave hoofprints shaped like horseshoes. When they do wear shoes, they're more like normal shoes.

Yeah, it seems like only the Royal Guards and Princesses wear any kind of shoes. Everyone else just goes bare hoofed.
That is the face of a man who just ate a kitten. Raw.

Perhaps a more literal application of the Coconut Effect? This is all the more puzzling considering the clop sound effect indicates a much harder surface than what we're actually seeing.

They have unicorns following them around tapping coconuts together.
