Yeah, I find that assessment of the Mane Six's money situation too simplified.

Fluttershy also gets money as a petsitter and wildlife manager plus the savings from her brief stint as a supermodel, Dashie is drawing Cadet-rank pay from the Wonderbolts as of recent episodes in addition to her Weather Team Captain and the prize money from being a Young Flier Competition winner, Pinkie also earns money as a party organizer and caterer.

@Ace: The Young Fliers' Competition was two years ago. Like hell she has any of it left.

Also the supermodel thing for Fluttershy was similarly long ago, I think.

@Red: What would she spend it on? Daring Do and Wonderbolts memorabilia? Treats for Tank? Lifetime supply of fitness drinks?

I can certainly see Fluttershy pampering her animals with her money or donating a lot to charity, but as far as we've seen of the Mane Six, they don't seem like the type to go on spending sprees, especially AJ (who probably sets a lot of her money aside for the farm). Pinkie probably does spend a lot on party supplies and cannon ammo, though, and Rarity probably sinks a lot of money into her generosity and her dressmaking materials.

For Twi, I mostly see her spending on vasting amounts of reading/writing material and all the scientific apparatus she apparently collects. Telescopes aren't cheap in a preindustrial society without mass production, especially with their fiddly bits and delicate glass lenses. Of course, this lends credence to the idea that Twi was already of upper-class or upper-middle-class stock...
