@Dark: It really depends. Some of them are mostly about the art, some of them are more about the writing. Some of them are probably worth looking up without the art, but I don't really follow any of them that closely, so I wouldn't know what to recommend.

There's a thread currently going on a D&D Forum titled 'Why all the hate for the shield?'. It will explain exactly why they're so inferior in 3.5ed (though animated shields are ok)
