Rarity can't fly, though. Not to mention that having pretty wings makes her go a little crazy.

Yeah, if spiders were allowed, Rarity would definitely be one. They can be plenty elegant, and they make beautiful stuff sometimes.
Pinkie as a pill bug doesn't really work, though. They roll up defensively and just sit there until you go away. I pegged her as a cricket because they're noisy and they jump all over the place.

I don't think I will ever watch the previous generation series. It's not the tone; this is one of my favorite anime of all time and it is scientifically proven that you can't get sugerier than this. My problem is the animation. It just looks so crude.
Panic and procrastination will not solve anything.

Honestly, my main gripe with earlier generations is the art style. It just isn't a cute or vibrant as the current one. They look too much like real horses, and horses aren't animals that I'd really consider "cute".
