My fanon on the batponies is that the two we saw are literally the only two in existence, a semi-magical mutation. They're also Predatory Omnivores.
Luna uses them not only as guards but also personal advisors, companions, butlers, messengers, and general go-to ponies... sometimes for less savoury and public jobs than others, thanks to their predatory instincts(which they are quite well-versed in using)
