It's weird how a new species of pony was introduced and then never mentioned again.

On the other hand, I guess it's possible that they were just normal pegasi that Luna altered with her magic because she has a thing for fangs and bat wings.

My fanon on them is, they were created by Nightmare Moon as the new kind of ponies to survive her eternal night.

The general fanon is that they are normal ponies that are altered by Luna, either fully or just an effect of the armor while they wear it.

Though Apples idea could work with that, she created them by tunrng normal ponies into them.

My fanon is that Luna has fewer guards than Celestia so gives them better enchantments to compensate. Celestia's just have the general appearance one and some minor strength, speed, etc enhancements. The Wing Blades thing as well.
