You're really rather negative sometimes, Boobus. The songs aren't meant to be great works of art; they're meant to be fun and enjoyable, and in that, they succeed rather well.

Plus, how can you not enjoy songs based on Sondheim being sung (well!) by colorful ponies?

Different strokes for different folks. Maybe boob doesn't find them fun?

Because I'd rather people write their own thing? I had the same beef with Animaniacs. Although Animaniacs was worse. At least MLP isn't full of itself.

@Ginger: pinkie had a little one when she learned about the Gala. Same tune as the song when she was bouncing around the gala itself.

I don't mind the songs, myself. I like the bigger musical number but as far as the small ones go, lets face it, they're just part of Pinkie's personality.

Actually this Equestria Daily quote explains it for me: I used to dislike the music portions of Disney movies. They always felt "forced".

He goes on to say that they don't feel forced with the MLP show for him. But they do for me. ESPECIALLY Art of the Dress, which I skip. I do rather like At the Gala, especially the Rarity and Rainbow Dash parts, but songs in general annoy me. I was glad when Disney made Atlantis because they finally made a movie NOT peppered with songs.

To me it's one of the LEAST forced. The plot involved Rarity making a bunch of dresses, which they obviously wouldn't be able to show us all of since it would get really fucking boring. We needed to get from Rarity agreeing to do the dresses, to Rarity having the dresses completed in only a few minutes. They needed a montage basically, a way to show a passage of time. and I think a musical number was the best way to go about doing it, since it allowed them to quickly give out plot details DURING the song, and the song itself was able to reflect Rarity's deteriorating mental state more efficiently than if they relied on traditional dialogue

I don't know enough about songs to say what they'd cut. I just found it long and annoying. But that's just my opinion.

As for classic literature ponies it can go the wrong way. Like Swift's "A Modest Proposal"

MLPFIM is show with a least forced songs, even less forced than in Phineas And Ferb.

None of them feel out of place, many feel important for episode or even they are high point of it. MLPFIM is one the shows when I whant to hear song. Compare with first MLP cartoon where song are forced (like typical cartoon in those times), pointless only to fill space in episode.

I think the best (as in worst) for forced songs are Disney knockoffs/wannabees

Each to their own I guess. Everyone else, if you get the chance listen to the French version of Art of the Dress (it's on YouTube). It's one of the better moments of the French dub, I think it outshines the original, even.

A few pages back, but I don't care cause I feel like answering it!

The most common gag is her jumping up and down while looking at the camera. She waves hi to Twilight in the pilot, and then looks sad when she gets igonred. There's a blink and you miss it moment in "Fall Weather Friends" where she's holding a sports cup with her hoof. In "Luna Eclipsed" she's dressed as a mummy and when Luna arrives and everypony bows Lyra is the only one with her eyes open and she might be looking at the camera (again), its hard to tell.

You know, , the background character page is a good description of Lyra's antics. :P

I'm sort of split on the songs. Some of them are really catchy, but at the same time they seem a bit out of place. I'm willing to accept that sort of "random burst into song" for like a musical, because that's the point of the whole thing, but it just seems weird to me when a bunch of ponies bust into song in an otherwise non-musical work. Not that the songs are bad, but sometimes I just feel like they don't gel with the rest of the episode.

But only few song are that one when somepony singing with no explanation, most time just some wierdo start singing and everypony else is aware of that and know this is weird, and sometimes song is completly in place like CMC song in Show Stopers.
