I wouldn't be surprised. Of course, no matter how they dodge the issue, it would still lend more evidence to the death theory.
What would be funny is if they were just in the episode as if they'd been around the entire time with no explanation for why we've never seen them or why we'll never see them again.

@Turtle: That's the first thing I thought, but they don't give us enough information to know for sure. The Apple family is big enough that they could easily have several branches in Manehattan.
