I'm of the opinion that nobody but Cadance and Shining Armor could have done that, since it was Cadance's powers at work there, but that's all up to interpretation.

They're just artifacts, though. It'd certainly suck for a group would-be heroes if they were disqualified from being able to save the world because their Honest member happened to be a donkey.

Well, no, it doesn't. I'm just not keen on the idea that said artifacts would prioritize a prospective wielder's species over their virtues.

unless their power was attuned to the natural magic of a pony. Yes they couldn't CHOOSE not to work for a non-pony, but they might work in such a way that only pony physiology or psychology can interact with them

Someone had an idea in a fanfic where there was an evil (well, okay, more like heavily misguided) AU version of the Mane Six wielding their Elements of Harmony perfectly until called out on their flawed logic, whereupon their Elements rejected them violently. (I believe it was one of those fics that deconstruct the Conversion Bureau premise, and pits the Conversion universe against a more canon-aligned Equestria)

I'm sure that Donkeys, Diamond Dogs, Dragons etc all have their own super magic artefacts of varying flavours and power designed to work in conjunction with their own magic.

I reckon if a band of six is compatible enough the Elements would edge them towards each other gently.

The sum result is that they'd bond better and begin improving each other's dispositions in general.

Fun fact: this predates Escape From Midnight Castle by about a decade or so.

I think I just solved my EP problem.

They make magical potions of which the active magic can only be triggered by them. Either this means that they are required to make it, or better yet, it only works on them.

So long as they have a CM equivalent, they'll probably be alright.

@Apple: potionmastery, huh. Well, they could make potions of better potency than a Unicorn by default.

My own solution is that Earth Ponies have a fair number of skilltrees where they can get better Masteries from than the other races, and have the best affinity for technology.

Yeah, a unicorn will need to cast powerful spells (which are beyond the power of most of them) to achieve what they can do with a few simple ingredients.
