Well, I wouldn't say a 'bitchin' apartment(Though Twilight DID know Spike would be at the library for some reason...). My apartment was honeslty pretty crappy. 4 guys in a two bedroom place at 750 a month... or you can pay twice as much to get an apartment to yourself.

Actually, on the note of Spike, I know this has likely come up before, but... I have to wonder if the 'hatch a dragon egg' is a standard test for the school of gifted unicorns... one would imagine you'd see at least a few more ponies wandering around with familiers/dragon buddies. Maybe they have other eggs in other cases, and that's how griffons and the like show up in Equestria?

Or maybe the faculty didn't want her in their class and tried to fake her out with an 'impossible' test.

Word Of God is that the dragon egg isn't the standard test, but rather something Celestia set up ahead of time to test a guess about Twilight.

I'd guess the egg thing is a standard test but you're not supposed to pass it, you're supposed to use your magic to the best of you're ability even in the face of failure. Twilight would have failed without the Sonic Rainboom since before that she didn't do any magic.

On the Sonic Rainboom, my headcanon is that Commander Hurricane pulled off the first one in his suicide by Discord to prove that Discord could be hurt and beaten. The result of it was that one out of place tooth he has.
