There's that Ask Wild Card tumblr where he uses an actual shotgun. The only difference between it and a regular, human shotgun is that its trigger thing is big enough so that he can fit his hoof through it.

So the challenge is inventing a projectile weapon usable by equines that can be reliably carried and fired with reasonable accuracy by a single soldier. I'll get back to you if I figure something out.

Well, maybe friendly soldiers have unique tags that the on-board cameras can scan instantaneously.
That would require quite a bit of expensive technology.
