I have a very basic grasp of French, enough to ask very simple questions and get a basic picture of the answers. Most of what I lack is vocabulary, really, and a finer grasp on grammar structure, though that's coming along well enough.

For what that's worth, school-taught language curriculums tend to be garbage, because language is not learned in a classroom. I mean, French is an official language in Canada. I took eight years of it in school, and I learned more french than I did there in a month of living in Montreal.
