@Yeller: Not really, the G1 Artifact was a real mirror and created baby genetic clones with a copy of the original's memories. Also they would become unique as they matured.

I say it was created by the pony version of the Fair Folk. They are going to come to Ponyville feeling very offended at how poorly the Mane Six treated their gift.

I disagree, because the Changelings ARE the fair folk, and Luna made sure Chrysalis wouldn't come back after she got launched off towards the Badlands.

They aren't necessarily the only kinds of fariy!ponies. Perhaps the Mirror pool was created by the Seelie court to the Changelings Unseelie.

Well then, at least the Seeli fair folk are less likely to rape and kill the lot of ponyville when they return(Not necessarily in that order, and certainly not that simply). Unless I'm getting the two mixed up. which ones where the Always Chaotic Evil and which ones were Lawful Neutral again?

The pond is a remnant of the Forbidden Weapon Technology that produced the Smooze.

Considering it's in the middle of the forest, perhaps it was created from a regular pool, which might have been tainted by the local magic, by a unicorn that got lost in the forest and tried not to go mad from isolation any way he could?

Seelie are the "nice" ones, and the Unseelie are the "bad" ones.

If nothing else it would be an interesting way to retool the Flutterponies.

Huh, I don't know what the story behind the pool is. Given the kind of weird stuff that happens in Equestria, it's possible that it could be a natural phenomenon. I mean, you have plants that play jokes and magical artifacts that embody emotions and ideals, so anything's possible I guess.

The Unseelie are the nasty guys. The Seelie are more... tolerable.

I hesitate to say "good" because (at least by the traditional version of the fae folk) they can still mess you up badly. But if you're careful and polite, you might come out alright.

Like I said, Lawful Neutral. They follow laws. Their laws. Laws that you aren't allowed to know.

To be honest the prospecto f the Seelie puts me on edge a lot more than the Unseelie. The unseelie you at least know what you're getting into. With the Seelie you spend the entire time around them horribly afraid you're going to offend them. Fear accompanies the possibility of death, calmness it's assurance, and all that.

The Everfree is a bastion of natural Wild Magic even Discord didn't tamper with.

My personal canon is that the Everfree Forest was originally an "ordinary" forest. In which a castle most often used by Luna was located. I like to think that its original name was the Forest of Midnight or something of the sort.

In any case, when Luna... turned, I imagine that the first fight between Celestia and Nightmare Moon began in that castle. The duel caused such an enormous and catastrophic clash of magical energies that it changed the forest forever. Freeing it, permanently, from the mandated cycle of nature set up by the equine races.

Hence, the Everfree Forest.

I like to imagine the Castle Ruins in the Everfree are the remains of Old Canterlot, the previous castle/capital of Equestria.
