The clones never show any kind of behavioral change I'd associate with genuine copies, the behavioral drift I call Clone Divergence.

(What it means: Clones will begin to have different memories from the original, and properly made "True" copies would begin behaving differently from the original as they collect a different set of memories.)

The Reflection Pinkies never exhibit this kind of Turing-complete behaviour, so I reason they're little more than golems or illusion copies.

There's another easy solution: The clones don't know everything the real Pinkie never taught them. You could just scan their memories and see whether have the blackboxed Private Memories only the real Pinkie would have.

Unless Celestia never raised Twi's clearance enough to do such a scanning spell (the Restoration spell she used to de-Discord her friends is a recollection/dispel spell, not a memory scanner).

I think what happens is that she starts to walk into the pool and then the reflection turns into a clone. The first time they used a more artistic animation that made it look like the real Pinkie was going into and out of the pool when in reality she never went the whole way in.

That and the fact that they were kinda dealing with a crisis meant that they were grasping at straws. When your town is being overrun with hundreds of Pinkies, you don't really have the time to sit down and mull things over. It's also the reason why they didn't realize which Pinkie was the real one immediately.

I took it to mean that the real Pinkie never had to climb into the water, and the first one

was a bait-and-switch: we initially think we're watching the original Pinkie, but we're actually watching the first clone move from the mirror world to the real world.

That would be running a punchline into the ground.

I've used duplicates in battle before, but they are usually very incomplete and are only designed to replicate my fighting technique. Also they're so incomplete they often don't even get artificial flesh cloned onto their chassis, and anyways they're all barcoded and have a special Duplicate ID marker on their RFID tags.
