one or both of them may have looked into the nightmare door and saw the other betraying them, or how failing their mission (the city they sought to liberate disappearing) may have caused them to doubt their own (or their sister's) abilities

I don't think they'd need to encounter the nightmare door when merely trying to stop him. In fact, they probably didn't find it since they would have destroyed if if they had.

Life is simple: it has no nontrivial normal subgroups.

Comparison of Sauron (LOTR only) and Sombra

The big difference between the two is that Sauron used minions. Tons of them. Sombra was not so lucky, and had to do everything himself...

Honestly, I don't know what the Elements would do to an evil mortal. If it could seal a Chaos God and cleanse the Night Princess, I have no idea what it would do to a mortal. Cleanse them? Chastise them? Vaporize them? I have no ideaaaaaa~
