Question: Are the colours of ponies genetic? If two Pink Ponies married and had foals, would their foals be pink? If a mare of a dark shade of red married a stallion of a lighter shade of red, would the foals have the colouration of their father, their mother, or a mixture of the two? Could such pairings be the reason for those ponies with two-toned manes?

Also, tail curliness: If a straight mare married a straight stallion, would their foals have straight tails? Ditto for a curly mare and a curly stallion? What about a curly stallion and a straight mare produce a foal of a straight tail, a curly tail, or a mixture (a wavy tail)?

If colours mix when mixed, then do they mix by the Pigment system (blue + red = purple) or the Light system (blue + red = magenta)?

I don't think we've really seen any rhyme or reason to color schemes. Pinkie looks nothing like the rest of her family. Rarity's family all has light coats. Twilight's family seems to be mostly on the "cool" side of the color spectrum. Applejack's family all have apple colors. The Cakes are yellow and blue while their children are brown and orangish. Yeah I have no idea.

From what we can see with Pinkie Pie(assuming her memory is accurate, which is hard to say), The Cake Twins(Who are already demonstrated to have a... varied family lineage) and Rarity and Sweetie... it's hard to say. We have as much theoretical evidence for one side as the other, but it's all circumstantial. In order to be able to tell we'd need to look back through their family lines for generations, looking to see if patterns existed in colouration. The Twins have a warm and warm/neutral colouration to their Parents warm and cool(which just makes things harder), Rarity and Sweetie have neutral coats and wram/cool manes, matching up with their parents, and Pinkie is warm all over to match wit the entire rest of her family being predominantly cool/neutral.

In short... fuck if I know.

AJ's entire family has warm colours as well, at least. Even the extended family. So it's possible specific colours don't carry, but warm/coolness MIGHT? Except that rules out Pinkie, though she's weird to begin with and we really have no idea how legit her backstory was.
