I did too have a very close friend who in the end turned out to be the single most despicable being I ever met. Then again, back then I lacked a lot of virtues I have now.

I second Blue's opinion. Yes, she was brash about it, but I understand Dash's angle.

Yeah, Gilda was an odd case. I think the main issue wasn't so much that Pinkie was trying to insert herself where she didn't belong, so much as Dash was okay with having Pinkie hang around, but Gilda wasn't, and rather than just tell Pinkie that, Gilda tried to antagonize her into going away.

I don't think she's irredeemably evil or anything, but she was definitely a Jerkass. I think the main reason that she was friends with Dash was because in the original circumstances they met. At flight camp, everything was about flying, so Gilda and Dash could bond over that; they were both good fliers and in that regard they can appreciate each other. Gilda's problem (and Pinkie's to a lesser extent) is that she wants to basically pick up where she and Dash left off; get back to flying and being awesome, whereas Dash now has other friends and other things she enjoys doing (hanging our with Pinkie). Gilda's main issue was mainly that she basically wanted Dash all to herself; if she was hanging out with her, Pinkie had to go. Whereas I think Pinkie would have been totally willing to put up with Gilda.

@Bluespade: *shrug* The impression I got from Dash is that she was just looking to get into a confrontation with the Dragon and didn't care about much else. I tend to get that impression a lot from season one Dash.

@Gilda discussion: We've had this conversation so many times before. I guess I'll pull out my opinion again. I think it'd be nice to see an episode where something causes Dash to remember Gilda and start talking about her with Pinkie or someone, and start going on about how much of a jerk she was. But then realize she misses her anyway, and go and try to make up with her. The moral would be that you shouldn't give up on your friends just because they're an asshole sometimes. I mean if Dash gave up on the Mane 6 as easily as she did Gilda she wouldn't be friends with any of them at this point.

@Blue: I'm really kind of torn on that. On one hand, it would be a totally valid plot and I think it would be intriguing to see how Gilda develops. On the other hand, one of the first things that really impressed me about this show was the fact that it averted the stock "anyone can be your friend if you're nice to them", and I honestly found it kind of refreshing that it went with the far more practical "sometimes people are jerks, no matter how nice you are". Not that I'm against seeing Gilda get redeemed or anything, but I don't think that the show necessarily handled her badly just by making her end the episode as a jerk, and that sometimes you really do need to cut ties with people.

I think the main issue is that we have no idea what Gilda and Dash's previous friendship was like. We have no idea whether they were legit friends who really cared about each other, or whether they just sort of stumbled into it due to common interest, or whether Gilda only hangs out with Dash because she thinks Dash meets her criteria for being cool enough to hang out with.

They had one little fight and Rainbow cuts ties with one of her oldest friends forever? That's not a mature decision. Gilda didn't do anything all that horrible, and her irritation with Pinkie was completely understandable (if not her actions). I think there's plenty of room for forgiveness there.
