My theory has been that she's kind of a Genius Ditz. She's really intelligent, it's just that she has such a different thought process from everypony else that she seems crazy.
Yeah, that's pretty much my take on her. That, and she's a bit of a klutz.

Genius Ditz is my headcanon too.
Life is simple: it has no nontrivial normal subgroups.
You know, what could they ever actually do with Derpy in canon that would change popular fanon on her? Not much, since she's relegated to the background, and fanon laughs at background canon unless they're in agreement.
The only thing I could think of is if they showed her doing something that fanon doesn't depict her as doing, yet also doesn't contradict it. Like if they showed her reading a comic book or something.
If anything, Derpy seems pretty friendly :3
Yeah, i can see the genious Ditz fitting her. And the klutzyness mostly due to poor depth perception.

So, the nuclear fallout from the Rainboom fell onto Fluttershy, giving her the telepathic ability to commune with animals, Twilight gained what was basically godhood for 20 seconds before it being tempered out, Pinkie was
turned irrevocably insane, Rarity found a bunch of pretty rocks, and Rainbow gained super speed, due to being the epicentre.
Applejack got nothing out the deal though.
