As far as I can tell, she just likes studying magic for the sake of SCIENCE, but she's also not averse to unleashing her powers when her friends are in serious need.

It's just that when given a hole to fill, fanon almost always chooses the most tragic explanation. Applejack's parents are never seen: They're dead. Celestia is thousands of years old: She's is torn up on the inside for having to banish her sister and watch all of her friends die. Heck, even normal fanon gets tragic fanon to fill in its own holes. Derpy is Dinky's mother: The father is either a deadbeat dad or just dead.

@Perpetual: I have to admit that that's probably one of the overall fanbases' attributes that bugs me most. I mean, I could understand doing that for one or two characters, but it pops up everywhere.

I still say that Dinky is the daughter of Carrot Top and that anonymous unicorn stallion from The Last Roundup. What else would this imply?

@Perpetual: Given the chaos going on during that attack, it's entirely possible that they're just random ponies and Carrot Top is naturally protective of the kid.

@JT That doesn't explain the loving look from the stallion on the left, though. I'm honestly surprised that he didn't get fanonized and shipped with Derpy.

Speaking of which, you never get a shot of his cutie mark in that scene. Does he appear anywhere else? (Where's Whatshisgame when you need him?)
