The Chrono Trigger one, even if it isn't trying to be much deeper and more epic than a romp through the story WITH PONIES, is fun enough to be mentioned. It's the fanfic equivalent of a good B-movie, the sort you watch with beer and friends.

The Best Night Ever is pretty much a crossover with Groundhog Day. I'm gonna try to finish reading it, even if it does ship Rarity and Blueblood together...

@Seraphem: I'm not lumping together all crossovers as having issues, I'm just saying that a lot of them do, and that crossovers in general just don't really interest me much unless they're straight up comedy. I prefer fanworks that take the original works on it's own terms rather than inserting other character and elements from other works. I fully admit that that's nothing more than my own personal preference.

Even if you ignore how good the story itself is, Best Night Ever is worth it for the sole purpose of its sequel and its epic political pretzels.

I'm always going to analyze it, but I only take it as seriously as the story tries to take itself. I'm willing to laugh off facepalm moments as long as the story isn't trying to use it as key plot elements for something important. Twilight losing her shit about the philosophy of a free salad, getting arrested as a terrorist, and epically breaking out of a high-security interrogation room while following a schlock spy handbook is one thing, but a pileup of stupid being used as the justification for chapters and chapters of SAD PONIES is...yeah, not so much.

No worries. I'm an author and grad student. I can't not analyze stuff I'm reading. That and when it comes to fanworks I can be Ginger-level picky. When it comes to original works I care a lot less about this kind of stuff.

Crossovers are the main thing I like about fanfiction in this fandom. One thing I love more than anything else is seeing others react to novel stimuli, whether it be in the form of new information or even a whole new verse. I love crossover fics because I am almost guaranteed to get that! It doesn't matter if I don't know the characters from the other work, if the fic is well written then that knowledge isn't needed to appreciate their reactions.
