Yeah, I don't know why people keep using words like "somepony" instead of somebody/one. I find it really gratuitous and silly at best.

I only ever use the suffix -pony when I'm actually talking about or to ponies.

Even inside the show, ponies saying "somepony" makes me raise my eyebrow. What's wrong with saying 'someone' or 'somebody'? I can understand saying things like 'It got out of hoof.' but that? I find them to be no different from, perhaps even more inane, than
Gratuitous Japanese and the likes.
