@ATC. We don't know for sure right now. The book from the Crystal Fair song makes them look like normal ponies that just live in the Crystal Kingdom to me. But we can't be certain. If they were crystal, the toys would make more sense, though.

Unless I missed a confirmation. I wonder if Ace Reporter whathisgame has a better answer?

I guess at this rate, it won't be starting until near October at least. But that's OK. Season two had 'false' starts, and didn't really start until around that time.
