I keep seeing them labeled as Biggs and Wedge.

And Yeah, I figure they have to be personal guards or something. It's one thing to have twins in your service, but another thing entirely for your entire service to be comprised of clones. Unless Celestia casts an illusion over them all to protect their civilian identities. they're like pony superheroes.

Ever look at a bunch of soldiers in uniform? There's suprisingly little variation.

Maybe it's a Wonderbolts type thing, and they wear suits to conceal how they really look. It'd be like racism to only recruit white pegasi, and not other colors. But those guys seem awfully buff for pegasi. How well do they fly?

Eh, maybe. But now that I think about it more, I sort of like the idea of them being twins. It would make a really neat dynamic, and I'm sure Celestia would approve - having them banter off of each other in less serious moments would make them more comfortable paling around with her.

well enough to carry Twilight and Spike on a golden wagon to ponyville, at least.

I was thinking more in terms of agility. Sure, they can carry a lot, but are they fast? Can they turn quickly?

yes, that's right. On a personal level, I seriously doubt that a pair of slaves would be decked out in gold armour and look fairly well fed. Though I suppose Celestia is simply very benevolent, in which case it's really more like indentured servitude anyhow.

Which, hey! is what medieval guard jobs were like anyways.

Well yeah, that's what indentured servitude was - you worked for someone, and in return they would feed you and give you shelter. You were usually working off a debt, or they had given your family a huge sum of money for your service. It's essentially slavery under contract; as opposed to the slave being an object owned by the master, they're simply a worker paying off a debt.

Ugh, I hate it when people act like Celestia's guards are slaves or whatever. These are the personal guards of the most powerful person in the country. They probably needed years of training and background checks out the ass. That's the kind of position you brag about, you don't see random hobos off the street being put into the CIA.

I'm not sure if they're the same two guards all the time; they'd be rather hard-pressed to cover every place Celestia goes with just the pair of them. =)

I like to imagine that the Princess has a royal knight of some kind. A personal elite bodyguard that eclipses the rest of the royal guard.

I'd actually like to see an episode where Celestia's guards are incapacitated, and she takes on one of the mane cast as a replacement until they recover.

^Having a personal elite squad makes a lot of sense, really. Most world rulers do, whether they're visible or not.

Of course, Celestia herself is a formidable combatant, but in the event that she does face an assassination attempt from someone who might actually give her a run for it, the Royal Guard (both regulars and elites) could very well be the deciding factor in an even match.
