That's what Spike is in Friendship Is Dragons.

And yeah the spiked ears are intentional, he's a species called a "Dragonoid", a sort of part dragon part person species whose origins are ancient and unknown.

The way he's always referred to as Baby reminds me of Neopets, where Baby is a color of paint.

I still want to know why Celestia just happened to have a dragon egg lying around. Not to mention that if it was part of the entrance exam, there's a decent chance of other baby dragons existing Equestria.

I always thought that it was a fake dragon egg, and Twilight's magic accidentally turned it into a real Dragon egg, so Spike is the first (and only one) of his new species.

It could have been an "impossible" test, where the real test was how creatively the prospective student could apply what little magic they knew to attempt it. And then Twilight had her crazy magic burst and managed to hatch it anyway.

Twilight has some serious power, but I don't think she's capable of creating a new species like that. My personal theory is that dragon eggs require magic to develop properly. The "natural" method would involve them just lying around for hundreds of years as they absorb magic, but the process can be sped up by creatures like unicorns who can maniuplate magic putting magic energy into the eggs. So Celestia uses them as a test of a given pony's magical potential. Twilight has the most because she's one of the only ponies who's hatched an egg all by herself. Most students would simply speed up the gestation a bit, but Twilight managed to cause it to actually hatch. It's all conjecture, obviously, but I think it makes sense.

I don't ever hearing that confirmed, no. It's likely that somebody mentioned that, but probably not in a capacity that would make it canon.
