Wow, it does look like something bad happened at Sweet Apple Acres and the Carousel Boutique, at least they look abandoned and run-down. And that overhead shot of the Crystal Empire reminds me of Crystal Tokyo from Sailor Moon, too.

The scenes of the farm and boutique looking abandoned and run-down are part of a series of visions that the ponies will see that is someone trying to tell them to go back to Ponyville because they are needed there to prevent a disaster/fix a disaster, kind of like when Sam sees the scenes of the Shire getting messed up in Galadriel's mirror in Lord of the Rings.

Something happens to Ponyville while the Mane Cast is in the Crystal Kingdom, and they see the wreckage when they come back and have to stop/fix whatever/whoever caused it to be that way.

That thing Trixie is wearing looks like a corrupted version of an element necklace, too.

That Crystal Empire looks very... Hm, futuristic, compared to everything seen in Equestria so far.

About those Bad Future shots, that seems like a new villain or Trixie got some serious upgrade. Given how smug she looks on those shots, something's in the air...

Another alternative: the antagonist(s) are trying to (Insert Objective Here)

mess with them, break their will, convince them to turn back, etc.

by showing corrupted versions of places and ponies familiar to them. (Actually-evil-and-not-just-arrogant Trixie, ruined Ponyville, that sort of thing.)

Anyway, more speculation: it's been noticed that the "alicorn amulet" (called as such in the filename) Trixie's wearing is somewhat reminiscent of the Crystal Empire character◊ from that upcoming quiz on Hasbro's microsite.

Now that I think about the episode again...for all the focus on Applejack, I can only remember what the other (very minor) characters did.

By the way, what's the deal with people being so upset about Derpy's voice change? I don't see much reason to be so.

It wasn't just the voice. It was the fact that they didn't mention her name and changed her eyes. (That last part pissed everyone off the most) Personally, I liked the new voice better than the old one. :/

Eh, that screams Discord. And I doubt he'd like such a picture, considering what we've seen in first two episodes.

I'd love if this was actually a real thing which, however, can be reverted somehow, i.e defeating the villain in question. If that would be Trixie... Oh boy. I wonder what her excuse would be.

Huh, those are interesting. I really have no clue what to make of them, given that they could really be just about anything. I mean, in "Putting Your Hoof Down" Fluttershy's cottage ends up looking even worse than those images, but on the other hand the implication that it's part of a season finale means it's probably more meaningful than that. Who knows? Could be anything from Bad Future, to an Imagine Spot, to the Crystal Empire taking over Ponyville. Should be interesting.

Or it could be none of the above and just happens to be Two Crazy Pony episodes back to back.

If that happened, I'd be coming after the writers with torches and pitchforks.

@Blissey: I'd wait until a movie is actually confirmed before assuming that. It's a possibility, but a two parter finale is much more likely.

Y'know what I wanna see? A reference to any G1 villain. I'm not necessarily saying that they have to appear, but I'd be happy if they were mentioned or cameoed as a drawing in a prophecy or something along those lines.

I'm still really excited about those season three shots. And yes, more villains too, though preferably new ones that reflect the show's themes.

Which...could be what exactly? We had Discord...and the Changelings...and yeah, Nightmare Moon too. I'd love for a 'hellish' villain to appear...which, seeing how hate leads to a freezing of the heart in this setting...is a cold themed baddie.

I'm kind of curious as to what the history of the Crystal Ponies is. I mean we're they a break away group from the main pony tribes, or did they develop completely separately from the ponies that founded Equestria? Until otherwise stated I think I'm going to go with the latter.

I think we may have a villain that will actually engage in manipulation and corruption. Not the unnecessarily convoluted mind-control stuff that Discord did.
