I don't think that's actually true.

Hey, I figured I better ask with my main account instead of my pony-puppet...

Some time ago, I did a gag where Surprise dressed up as a nun and joked about reading the Bible to kids, and several members suggested she should censor out all the sex.

I didn't think much of it at the time, but suddenly it occured to me... why is it that everyone naturally assumes that Pony society would shy away from the subject of sex? In the real world, that only happens in western society, and then pretty much only because of the influence of certain religions. As we have no reason to believe similar religions exist in Pony society, isn't it then more logical to assume that they're honest with kids about where they come from, from the get-go?

Or would there still be a reason for some sort of abstinence and "innocence-protecting?"

(How innocent can you be when your childhood revolves around getting your butt tattooed?)

Just a thought, not trying to start anything, just curious.

Well, Equestria's culture does appear to be analogous to western culture, albeit anachronistic.

@Moe It's probably just a combination of the source material being a kids show and Like Reality Unless Noted. All headcanon is is assumptions, anyway.

@Turtle: I'm trying to register on your forum. Why isn't the "secret question" accepting "Fast Eddie" as an answer?

[down] Not to nitpick, but the original phrase is "Very special someone" which is just as gender-neutral, so I doubt it's saying anything more that what you're implying.

The really interesting thing here is that "Very Special Somepony" is gender neutral.tongue

But, seriously, it's probably because Equestria is based on Western culture because it was made up by Westerners and most of the fans are Westerners.

I imagine that Equestria is more open-minded about sex and sexuality, so you don't have a vocal abstinence or anti-gay crowd running around, but it's still something you're not really supposed to know about more than a vague notion that it exists until your older, like alcohol or property taxes.

My personal take on it is that they do tend to shy away from the subject around foals, but not due to moralistic "sex is improper" reasons, but more because they don't see the point of explaining it until the foals approach the age where it would actually be relevant, and because younger ponies might not be able to handle the subject maturely. That and I think that due to the western origin of the show the ponies probably just treat the subject with a general degree of privacy; sort of a "what a pony does in their bedroom is their own business". Also Rule of Funny.

But yeah, I tend to think that in Equestria sexual orientation is basically just a question of preference on par with preferring a certain hair color or something.

@Purple: Mares.

As for the topic; when I was a colt, the extent of my sexual knowledge was that I came from my mother. At the time, I never thought much of it, I just accepted because my parents told me. I did learn the truth about it eventually when I was around 15.

On the topic of pregnancy and teaching kids about it, I knew what pregnancy was when I was really little (my sister's two years younger than me), but I didn't know how it happened until I was 7-11 years old.
